The season changes your odds of a clear sky, not the clock. The dry months of April to October give the most reliable, cloud-free sunrises; the wet season of November to March pushes more dawn cloud over the caldera, though we run the trip year-round and the road stays open.
Since the pickup time is fixed, the only seasonal adjustment worth making is buffer. In the wet season, if your itinerary allows, keep a spare morning near Kelimutu so a fogged-out first attempt is not your only chance — the cloud often cycles, and a second dawn frequently delivers. The dry season rarely needs that insurance, but July and August bring domestic crowds and the busiest platforms, which is its own reason to leave at 03.30.
