Ende in Half a Day
With a spare morning in Ende, two stops matter: Bung Karno’s exile house in town and the Blue Stone Beach at Penggajawa on the coast west of the city. Both fit comfortably into three or four hours before you climb to Moni.
The Rumah Pengasingan Bung Karno is the modest home where Indonesia’s first president, Soekarno, was exiled by the Dutch from 1934 to 1938; it is now a small museum with his furniture, books and photographs, and a short walk from the waterfront. Twenty minutes west along the coast, Penggajawa — known to travellers as Blue Stone Beach — is a shoreline of smooth green-blue pebbles that are still gathered and traded here. Between the two you can loop through Ende’s harbour, the central market and a coffee stop.

Ende Airport Pickup
Ende’s H. Hasan Aroeboesman Airport (ENE) is about a five-minute drive from the town centre, and our driver-guide meets you at arrivals with a name board and the exact car you booked. There is no queue for a taxi and no haggling — you walk out and the car is there.
Most travellers reach Ende on a short domestic hop connecting through Kupang, Labuan Bajo or Bali. The terminal is small, so pickup is simple: we load your luggage and you choose the plan. You can drive straight to Moni the same day (about 1.5 hours, arriving in time for an early night before sunrise), or spend the morning on the Ende half-day above and head up in the afternoon. Airport pickup is included in the day rate — there is no separate transfer fee.
The Drive: Ende to Moni
Ende to Moni is 50 km and about 1.5 hours on paved but winding mountain road, climbing from sea level to roughly 700 m through rice terraces, coffee gardens and roadside villages. It is one of the easier legs of the Trans-Flores route, but the bends are constant, so a steady local driver matters.
We stop where it is worth stopping: a ridge viewpoint or two, a coffee warung, and — if you have time and the season is right — the short detour to Murundao waterfall just outside Moni. The table below sets out the distances that shape any Ende–Moni–Kelimutu plan.

Moni Village: Where to Stay
Moni is where you sleep before Kelimutu — not Ende. It is a single ribbon of homestays, guesthouses and a couple of small lodges strung along the highway 13 km below the crater, which is exactly why the 03.30 sunrise start is bearable from here and painful from anywhere else.
Rooms range from simple fan homestays to a few nicer lodges with hot water; standards are modest and the village is quiet after dark. What matters most is that your host can put out coffee and a flask before 03.30 and that your driver is parked outside. Sunrise Staging From Moni
Sunrise runs leave Moni between 03.30 and 04.00. The gate opens before dawn, the drive up takes 30–40 minutes, then a roughly 30-minute walk up stairs to the viewpoint, with first light over the three crater lakes around 05.30–06.00.
Kelimutu’s three lakes sit inside a volcanic rim at about 1,600 m, so it is genuinely cold before dawn — layers, a windbreaker and a headtorch make the difference. Park entry is bought as official tickets at the gate: foreign visitors pay IDR 150,000 on weekdays and IDR 225,000 on public holidays, Indonesian visitors IDR 20,000 and IDR 30,000. Onward East to Maumere or West to Bajawa
After Kelimutu you go one of two ways: east to Maumere (95 km, about 3 hours) to fly out, or west toward Bajawa (95 km, about 2.5 hours) to keep the Trans-Flores overland going.
Heading east, the road drops through hills and coffee country to Maumere’s coast and its airport — a natural finish line if you have flown into Labuan Bajo and out of Maumere.
