Labuan Bajo to Maumere overland is a roughly 510 km, five-leg drive across the spine of Flores that takes three to four days by private car. Our own Toyota Innova or Hiace runs it with a local driver-guide, real per-leg driving times and published day rates — no broker, no “price on request”, and no guessing which mountain road eats your afternoon.
Most travellers picture Flores as a boat trip. It is also an island you can drive end to end, and the classic corridor is west-to-east: Labuan Bajo on the Komodo coast to Maumere on the far east, threading Ruteng, Bajawa, Ende, Moni and Mount Kelimutu on the way. I am Flores Overland Editorial Desk, born in Ruteng and I have driven this highway for over eleven years. Below is exactly how the route breaks down, leg by leg, with the honest driving hours, the road conditions I meet every week, where to sleep, and what each stage costs in a car that is ours, not a subcontractor’s.
The Route at a Glance
The Labuan Bajo–Maumere corridor is five driving legs totalling about 510 km. On paper that looks like a single long day; in reality it is 15 to 19 hours of mountain driving spread sensibly over three to four days so you actually see Wae Rebo detours, Bena, the hot springs and a Kelimutu sunrise. Here is the whole spine in one table.
| Leg | Route | Distance | Driving time | Road character |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Labuan Bajo → Ruteng | 130 km | ~4 hours | Sealed, steady climbing switchbacks into the highlands |
| 2 | Ruteng → Bajawa | 135 km | ~4 hours | The most winding stretch; ridge after ridge, slow but scenic |
| 3 | Bajawa → Ende | 95 km | ~2.5 hours | Descends to the south coast, volcano and sea views |
| 4 | Ende → Moni | 50 km | ~1.5 hours | Short climb back inland to the Kelimutu staging village |
| 5 | Moni → Maumere | 95 km | ~3 hours | Over the pass then down to the north-east coast |
| Total Labuan Bajo → Maumere | ~510 km | ~15–19 hours | Best split across 3–4 days | |
Every distance and time above is from real trips, not a maps estimate that ignores potholes, market-day traffic in Ruteng, or the fog that settles on the Bajawa ridges after 3 pm. Read on for what each leg is actually like, or jump straight to every published rate.
Leg 1 — Labuan Bajo to Ruteng (~4 Hours)
Labuan Bajo to Ruteng is 130 km and takes about four hours, a sealed but relentlessly climbing road that lifts you from sea level into the cool Manggarai highlands. This is the gentlest leg of the five and the best one to start on after a morning Komodo boat handoff.
You leave the Labuan Bajo waterfront and climb almost immediately. The tarmac is in good shape, but it is switchback country, so four hours is honest driving, not a lazy estimate. We like to roll out by 8 am so the mountain fog has lifted and we clear Ruteng’s midday market traffic. The reward near the end is Cancar, the famous lingko spider-web rice fields outside Ruteng — a five-minute detour and a short walk to a viewpoint that most drivers rush past. Ruteng itself sits at around 1,200 m; bring a light jacket because the evenings are genuinely cold, and the town makes a solid coffee stop whichever way you are heading. Good overnight base if you started late, or push through to Bajawa if you left Labuan Bajo at dawn. For the deeper geology and seasonal surface reports of this whole spine, our Trans-Flores road conditions guide goes leg by leg.
Leg 2 — Ruteng to Bajawa (~4 Hours)
Ruteng to Bajawa is 135 km in about four hours and is the twistiest leg on the route — ridge after ridge with very few straight sections. It is short in kilometres but long in steering, so we never rush it.
This is where passengers prone to car sickness feel it most, and where a calm, familiar driver earns his keep. The scenery is the payoff: coffee plantations, deep green valleys, and the first proper look at classic Flores volcano country. Bajawa is Ngada highland territory and the base for two of the route’s best cultural stops — the megalithic villages of Bena and Luba under Mount Inerie, plus the Malanage and Mangeruda hot springs. If your schedule allows a full day here, it is worth it; see our Bajawa and Bena village tour for the day plan and entrance donations. Bajawa town has simple, comfortable guesthouses and is the standard second overnight on a westbound run.
Leg 3 — Bajawa to Ende (~2.5 Hours)
Bajawa to Ende is 95 km and about two and a half hours, dropping out of the highlands toward the south coast with sweeping sea-and-volcano views. After two long mountain legs, this shorter descent feels like a breather.
The road improves as you lose altitude and the temperature climbs back up. Ende is a working port city, the place where Indonesia’s first president Sukarno was exiled in the 1930s — his modest house is now a small museum — and the coastline just west at Penggajawa is dotted with the distinctive blue volcanic stones the area is known for. Ende has the region’s main airport, so it doubles as a useful entry or exit point if you want to fly one leg of the journey rather than drive the full 510 km. Many travellers who only have a few days start or finish here instead of Maumere; we cover that in the private driver route options. If you are hungry, Ende is also the last decent lunch town before Moni, where dinner options are limited to a handful of homestay kitchens. Most overland groups pause in Ende only briefly before the short hop up to Moni.
Leg 4 — Ende to Moni (~1.5 Hours)
Ende to Moni is just 50 km and around ninety minutes, a short climb back inland to the village that stages the Mount Kelimutu sunrise. It is the easiest leg of the trip and deliberately timed for a mid-afternoon arrival.
You want to reach Moni with daylight to spare, settle into a homestay, eat early and sleep, because the Kelimutu wake-up call is brutal: pickup is 03.30 to 04.00 to reach the crater rim before first light. Moni is a small, friendly strip of homestays and warungs at the foot of the volcano — not luxurious, but exactly where you need to be the night before sunrise. The three crater lakes of Kelimutu, each a different and shifting colour, are the single most photographed sight on the whole overland. We break down the pickup timeline, entrance fees and the walk to the viewpoint in the dedicated Kelimutu sunrise tour page. Treat Moni as a one-night staging post, not a destination in itself.
Leg 5 — Moni to Maumere (~3 Hours)
Moni to Maumere is 95 km and about three hours, climbing over a pass before descending to the north-east coast and the end of the line. Most people drive it the same morning as the Kelimutu sunrise, after coming back down to Moni for breakfast.
The final leg trades highland fog for coastal warmth. Maumere is a relaxed seaside town with its own airport (Frans Seda), which is why it is the natural eastern terminus — you can fly out to Bali or Kupang from here rather than backtracking. If you have an extra half-day, Koka Beach and Magepanda on the way in are quiet, pretty stops that almost no rushed itinerary includes. Arriving in Maumere by mid-afternoon leaves comfortable margin for an evening or next-morning flight. That completes the classic westbound Trans-Flores spine; the reverse works just as well and, in one respect, better.
Maumere to Labuan Bajo (Reverse Direction)
Maumere to Labuan Bajo runs the identical five legs in reverse — about 510 km over three to four days — and suits travellers who fly into Maumere and finish at the Komodo boats. Same distances, same driving hours, one genuinely different rhythm.
Driving east-to-west, you tackle Kelimutu near the start of the trip while you are freshest, then work through Bajawa and the Manggarai highlands, and roll into Labuan Bajo at the end — which is ideal if your plan is to cap the overland with a Komodo liveaboard or day boat. The light also falls differently: the Ruteng and Bajawa ridges catch better morning sun heading west, so photographers often prefer this direction. One practical note — luggage lives in the car the whole way in either direction, so pack a small day bag with a warm layer and your Kelimutu-morning essentials on top, and leave the main case untouched until the overnight stops. Bookings for this direction are far rarer than the westbound run, which means less competition for it in search and, frankly, a quieter road for you. If you want the eastern-terminus version, just tell us your Maumere arrival and Labuan Bajo departure dates on WhatsApp and we build the day split around them.
How Many Days to Split It
Three days is the fast minimum, four days is the comfortable standard, and five to seven days lets you add Wae Rebo, a full Bajawa day and the Riung islands without living in the car. The 510 km is not the constraint — the sights beside it are.
- 3 days / 2 nights: Labuan Bajo → Bajawa → Moni → Maumere. Long driving days, Kelimutu included, little slack. Only choose this if flights force it.
- 4 days / 3 nights: the sweet spot. Overnights in Ruteng or Bajawa, Ende or Moni, and a relaxed Kelimutu sunrise before the final run to Maumere.
- 5–7 days: add a Wae Rebo overnight, a proper Bajawa culture day, and optionally Riung. This is where the overland becomes a trip rather than a transfer — see our seven-day Flores overland for the fully paced version, or the overland tours hub to compare durations side by side.
Because we charge by the day, not by the kilometre, adding a day only adds one day’s car rate — the maths is simple and it is published in full.
Cost Per Leg and Per Trip
We price by the day, not the leg: a private Toyota Innova is IDR 1,500,000 per day and a Hiace is IDR 2,500,000 per day, both including fuel, the driver-guide and the driver’s own accommodation and meals. A leg that fills a driving day therefore costs one day’s rate; multi-day trips are simply the daily rate times the number of days.
| Vehicle | Per day | Best for | Included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota Innova + driver-guide | IDR 1,500,000 | 1–4 passengers | Fuel, English-speaking driver-guide, driver’s accommodation & meals |
| Toyota Hiace + driver-guide | IDR 2,500,000 | 5–14 passengers | Same inclusions, more space and luggage room |
Worked examples for the full Labuan Bajo–Maumere spine, transport only:
| Trip length | Innova total | Hiace total |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days / 2 nights | IDR 4,500,000 | IDR 7,500,000 |
| 4 days / 3 nights | IDR 6,000,000 | IDR 10,000,000 |
| 5 days / 4 nights | IDR 7,500,000 | IDR 12,500,000 |
What the car rate does not cover: your own hotels and meals, the Kelimutu entrance fee (IDR 150,000 per foreign visitor on a weekday, IDR 225,000 on public holidays), village donations such as Bena (around IDR 50,000), and any boat or activity tickets. We keep those separate and transparent rather than burying them in a padded “package” figure — the complete breakdown lives on our published rates page. Booking is straightforward: a modest deposit by bank transfer holds your dates and driver, and the balance is settled on the ground when you meet your car. Trips built to your exact dates always get a tailored quote within 24 hours.

Route FAQ
How long does it take to drive from Labuan Bajo to Maumere?
The full 510 km is about 15 to 19 hours of driving across five mountain legs. We spread it over three to four days so you can actually see Kelimutu, Bajawa and the highlands rather than staring at switchbacks for two exhausting days.
Can you do Labuan Bajo to Maumere in one day?
No — not safely or sensibly. Even non-stop it is a punishing 15-hour-plus mountain drive with no room for the sights that make the route worthwhile. Three days is the realistic minimum and four is far more comfortable.
Is the Trans-Flores road paved the whole way?
Yes, the main Labuan Bajo–Maumere corridor is sealed for essentially its entire length. It is paved but constantly winding and mountainous, so driving times are governed by curves and gradients, not by road quality. Occasional fog or a rainy-season landslide can slow a stretch.
What does a private car for the whole route cost?
A private Innova is IDR 1,500,000 per day and a Hiace IDR 2,500,000 per day, fuel and driver-guide included. A typical 4-day/3-night overland is IDR 6,000,000 for an Innova, transport only — hotels, meals and entrance fees are separate and published openly.
Which direction is better, Labuan Bajo to Maumere or the reverse?
Both cover the same 510 km. Drive west-to-east (Labuan Bajo first) if you begin with a Komodo boat; drive east-to-west (Maumere first) if you fly into Maumere and want to finish at the Komodo boats. The reverse run tackles Kelimutu early while you are freshest.
Where do you stop overnight along the way?
On a four-day plan the usual overnights are Ruteng or Bajawa on the first night, Ende or Moni in the middle, and Moni the night before the Kelimutu sunrise. Moni is essential the evening before Kelimutu because pickup is 03.30 to 04.00.
Can I start or end the overland at Ende instead?
Yes. Ende has an airport, so many travellers with limited time fly one end and drive the rest — for example Ende to Labuan Bajo westbound. Tell us your flights on WhatsApp and we build the leg split and quote around them.
