The 5-day itinerary runs one way, west to east: fly into Labuan Bajo, drive across the island, and fly out of Maumere. It is the leanest way to see the highland heart of Flores — Manggarai rice terraces, Ngada volcanoes and the Kelimutu crater lakes — without ever doubling back on yourself.
The times below are real moving hours behind the wheel. Photo stops, lunch and village visits add one to two hours to each day, so we build the schedule around dawn starts rather than late finishes.

How the flights work
Most travellers fly into Labuan Bajo (LBJ) from Bali or Jakarta, ride across the island, and fly home out of Maumere (MOF), so no day is wasted backtracking. Both are short domestic hops from Denpasar. We time your Day 1 pickup to your inbound flight and your Day 5 airport drop to your outbound one, and we always leave a comfortable buffer on the last morning in case an early-season shower slows the final approach into town.
Who the 5-day route suits
This is the right length if you want the full Trans-Flores crossing — highlands, volcanoes, traditional villages and the Kelimutu lakes — but only have five days on the ground. It is a genuine road trip with real driving, not a resort holiday, so it rewards travellers who enjoy changing scenery and a village-to-village rhythm. If you want beach time, Wae Rebo, or a Komodo boat, budget an extra day or two and we will stretch the plan to fit.
Day 1: Labuan Bajo to Ruteng (130 km, ~4 hours)
The trip opens with a morning pickup from your Labuan Bajo hotel or the airport, then a steady climb inland into Manggarai country. Your first proper stop is the Cancar spider-web rice fields, the circular lingko paddies just outside Ruteng, best seen from a small hillside viewpoint the local kids will happily point you to.
Ruteng sits at around 1,200 m, so the air turns cool and misty by late afternoon — pack a light layer. If we are ahead of schedule, we can add the Liang Bua “Hobbit” cave or a quiet Manggarai village on the way in. Overnight in Ruteng.

Ruteng is the capital of the Manggarai regency and a working highland town rather than a tourist stop, which is part of its charm — coffee warungs, a Sunday market and cool evenings. It also breaks the climb gently: starting the crossing with a shorter first day lets you shake off the flight and settle into the pace before the longer legs that follow.
Day 2: Ruteng to Bajawa (135 km, ~4 hours)
Day 2 is one of the most scenic legs of the whole crossing. After breakfast the road climbs past the Ranamese crater-lake viewpoint, drops toward the south coast near Aimere, then winds back up to Bajawa at about 1,100 m.
The afternoon belongs to Ngada culture. We visit the megalithic village of Bena at the foot of Mount Inerie, where high thatched roofs stand over ancestral stones (a small donation, around IDR 50,000), then soak at the Malanage or Mangeruda hot springs, where a naturally hot river runs into a cold one. Bajawa is the highest town on the route and one of the coolest, so an evening here is easy on the body after a full driving day. If you are a coffee drinker, this is the region to try a fresh Bajawa arabica; the volcanic soil around Inerie grows some of the best beans in eastern Indonesia, and your driver-guide can point you to a roaster in town.
Day 3: Bajawa to Ende to Moni (145 km, ~4 hours)
We start with the Wolobobo viewpoint for a clean morning look at Inerie’s perfect cone, then descend to the south coast. Bajawa to Ende is 95 km, about 2.5 hours of coastal curves; just before Ende, the blue-and-black pebble beach of Penggajawa makes a good leg-stretch, and Ende town holds the modest house where Sukarno lived in exile in the 1930s.
From Ende it is a short 50 km, roughly 1.5 hours uphill, to Moni — the village at the foot of Kelimutu and your base for tomorrow’s sunrise. It is an early night: a simple homestay dinner, then bed. More on this stretch in our Ende & Moni gateway guide.
Day 4: Kelimutu Sunrise, then Moni to Maumere (95 km, ~3 hours)
The alarm is early. Pickup from Moni is around 03:30–04:00 for the short drive up to the Kelimutu gate, followed by a 30-minute walk up stone steps to the viewpoint. Sunrise lands around 05:30–06:00 over the three crater lakes, which shift between turquoise, green and near-black as their minerals change through the year.
The national-park entrance fee for foreign visitors is IDR 150,000 on weekdays and IDR 225,000 on Sundays and public holidays, paid in cash at the official gate (rates can change, so we always reconfirm at the ticket window). Local lore says the lakes hold departed souls — the young, the old and the wicked each in their own colour — while the science is mineral: dissolved iron and volcanic gases repaint the water over months, so no two visits look quite the same.
Back in Moni for a proper breakfast, we then drive east to Maumere — 95 km, about 3 hours — with optional stops at Koka or Paga beach and the Sikka ikat-weaving village, where women still weave on backstrap looms. Day 5: Maumere and Departure
A relaxed final morning by the sea. When it is time, we transfer you to Frans Seda Airport (MOF) in Maumere for your onward flight to Bali or Jakarta. If your flight is in the afternoon, we can add a snorkel stop or a nearby weaving village before the airport run.
Maumere sits on a calm bay with some of the best diving in Flores, so if you have booked a later flight it is worth a mask-and-fins morning at a house reef or a quick boat out to a nearby islet. Otherwise, a slow breakfast, a walk along the waterfront and a last Flores coffee round the trip off nicely before check-in.
That closes the classic 5-day Trans-Flores line. Travelling the other way — flying into Maumere and finishing in Labuan Bajo for a Komodo boat trip — works just as well; ask us to flip the itinerary and we will rebuild the days around your flights.

How many days do you need for a Flores overland?
Five days and four nights is the classic minimum to cross the island from Labuan Bajo to Maumere and still catch a Kelimutu sunrise. Three or four days feels rushed; six or seven days let you add Wae Rebo, Riung or slower rest stops without changing the core route.
Is 5 days enough to see Flores?
Five days is enough for the highland core — Ruteng, Bajawa, Bena, Ende, Moni and the Kelimutu lakes. It does not cover Wae Rebo, which needs its own overnight, or a Komodo boat trip, which sits outside the overland and adds one to two days from Labuan Bajo.
How much does a 5-day Flores overland cost?

Does the 5-day route include Wae Rebo?
No. Wae Rebo needs a dedicated overnight in the mountains, so it is not part of the classic 5-day line to Maumere. Adding it makes the trip six days — we cover that on our dedicated 6-day Flores overland itinerary.
What is the driving like each day?
Expect three to five hours of moving time per day on sealed but winding mountain roads, split by photo, meal and village stops. It is comfortable in a private car, but travellers who get motion-sick should sit up front and bring their usual tablets.
Should I go Labuan Bajo to Maumere or the reverse?
Both work and cost the same. Labuan Bajo to Maumere is popular if you want a Komodo boat trip at the start of your holiday; the reverse (Maumere to Labuan Bajo) suits travellers flying in via Maumere or ending with Komodo. Just tell us your flights and we flip the days.
When is the best time for a Flores overland?
The dry season from April to October is best, with clear Kelimutu sunrises and firm roads. The route still operates in the wet season (November to March), but expect occasional afternoon mist in the highlands and short, quickly cleared landslides after heavy rain.
